You know that scene in a movie when the protagonists are ready to give up? The battle is lost, the girl is about to marry the wrong guy, or the evil queen has banished the real princess. But then something completely unexpected happens that saves the day!

J. R. R. Tolkien calls this moment the “eucatastrophe,” a surprise that changes the way things were going. The eucatastrophe brings “Joy beyond the walls of the world, poignant as grief.”
